BLANKET BAN ON ITV NEWS NOT THE ANSWER - HARVEY

Commenting on reports that ITV News has been banned from frontline access to troops, Liberal Democrat Shadow Defence Secretary, Nick Harvey MP said:

"This Government appears to be tightening its grip on media access to our armed forces.

"Excessive control of the media challenges the principles of democracy. Only the free flow of information will allow an informed and constructive debate on the role of our troops and the way forward in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Where an invasion of privacy has taken place investigations must be carried out, but a blanket ban on broadcasting in conflict zones is not the answer."
