On the day the UN annual session on arms control opens and the Control Arms Campaign's report Arms Without Borders is published, Liberal Democrat Shadow Defence Secretary, Nick Harvey MP attacked the Government for failing to tackle the illicit trade in small arms.
He said:
"Ministers must give assurances that the implementation of an international instrument for arms control will lead to an Arms Trade Treaty with enough clout to put an end to the illicit trade in small arms.
"It is deeply regrettable that the Government has made no efforts to progress the UN Programme of Action following the collapse of the UN Small Arms and Light Weapons Review Conference in July.
"Negotiations on arms transfers overseas are meaningless without tough controls on end use on all UK arms exports."
