INCREASING AFGHAN THREAT POSES NEW CHALLENGES - HARVEY

Commenting on remarks by Lieutenant General David Richards about the persistent conflict faced by British troops in Afghanistan, Liberal Democrat Shadow Defence Secretary Nick Harvey MP, said:
"These comments expose the severe challenges facing British troops, and are hard to reconcile with ministers' original remarks about a three-year timescale.
"Only last month the Defence Secretary denied that the Taliban posed a long-term threat to the country's stability.
"It is increasingly clear that we are paying a heavy price for four years of neglect.
"Ministers must explain how British troops will respond to this expanding threat, and give assurances that all necessary air assets, equipment and weaponry will be provided."
