Commenting on Des Browne's suggestion that a vote may be held in Parliament on renewing Britain's independent nuclear deterrent, Liberal Democrat Shadow Defence Secretary, Nick Harvey MP said:
"It is essential that Parliament should vote on a key question of Britain's national interest for the next 40 or 50 years.
"For such a decision to be made by Ministers alone, using executive powers, would be a disgrace.
"Des Browne is entirely right that the Government needs to marshal the facts and arguments before laying out the options, all of which makes it nonsensical for Gordon Brown to have pre-empted that whole process by leaping to premature conclusions."
