North Devon MP Nick Harvey is making representations to the Primary Care Trust regarding the lack of NHS dentistry available in North Devon, particularly after at least two practices have withdrawn their NHS services following the Government's new dental contract commencing on 1 April.
Mr Harvey says "these practices are now withdrawing their NHS services because of targets set by the Health Authority which have meant significant changes to the way the current practices work. Despite the Minister's assurances that the new contracts will have significant benefits for dentists and patients many dentists believe that this is simply not the case and to continue the care that they currently offer they are being forced into the regrettable position of withdrawing their NHS services.
"I have taken the matter up with the PCT asking what steps they will be taking to ensure NHS dentistry remains available throughout North Devon . The current situation is simply unacceptable and although Dental Health Plans are being offered this is beyond the means of many people and I believe there should always be access to the NHS services.
"I am doing all I can to ensure this is the case here in North Devon".
