The plight of Instow resident Ben Thomas and his fellow British nuclear test veterans was highlighted by ITV Westcountry on 3 December. Interviewed by Barnstaple reporter Seth Conway, Mr Thomas explained he was seeking justice for those who remained.
Mr Thomas served with the RAF for 18 months on Christmas Island in the South Pacific during British nuclear tests and has since suffered ill-health.
Nick Harvey MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Defence Secretary, who has championed Mr Thomas' cause, filmed outside Westminster said, 'Clearly these veterans are suffering from numerous types of skin cancer and their children have had high incidents of deformities such as spina bifida, it really is time something was done to recognise their unique situation.'
A recent Parliamentary cross-party inquiry into Nuclear Test veterans published its findings in early November, this called on the Government to honour its duty of care and devise a new compensation system to make getting financial assistance easier.
Previous attempts to gain these veterans compensation were rejected by the European Court of Human Rights, which upheld the British Government's stance.
