Nick Harvey comments:
'It is exceptionally good news that Combe Martin Museum has received a Heritage Lottery Fund development grant that will enable it to move into the village centre and provide a new exciting attraction for visitors.
'I understand that the 'Stage 1' grant of £10,400 will be used for development work and will lead to an application for a further 'Stage 2' grant. This will help to furbish the new building and improve the exhibitions.
Combe Martin Museum Chairman, Tricia Hampson says:
'After two years of hard work, form filling and nail biting we were told that we had been successful in obtaining a Stage 1 pass for a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
'We now have to work on the Stage 2 bid and need to raise £20,000 as match funding. We hope that the local community will continue to support us in this and donations for the slate wall will be gratefully received. The Committee has been overwhelmed by the continuing support from the village for this venture and we shall keep you all informed on our progress.'
'I wish them every success with this very worthwhile project,' concludes Nick Harvey, 'and I look forward to visiting the revamped building.'
Background:
The old Sail Loft will be renovated and used to house the Museum's maritime exhibits and will also provide space for meetings and school visits. The unique opportunity for children to undertake activities exploring the beach, followed by access to themed exhibitions in the Museum will be developed and has great support from schools throughout North Devon.
The Museum now needs support from the local community to help raise the remaining funds required to complete their improvement plans and to be eligible for the 'Stage 2' funding. For further information on the plans or to help by donating funds, contact the Museum on 01271 373003.
