With the media reporting nationwide chaos caused by the floods many worry that this is the shape of things to come. Amongst others homes in Devon, Humberside, Yorkshire and Gloucestershire have all been affected. Having gleaned valuable lessons from previous flooding Devon now has a revised 'Flood Warning and Response Plan' in place.
While we have been spared the worst of it in North Devon it is reassuring to know that there are incident plans for Barnstaple, Braunton, Instow and South Molton in place should things get out of hand. To date the Taw seems to have been coping with all the additional water; tidal flooding is assessed to be the biggest threat to Barnstaple. Unfortunately Bideford has not been so lucky with streams overflowing their banks inundating a number of homes.
The fall out amongst the insurance industry was considerable during the last bout of serious flooding. This time it is likely to be worse with increased premiums and increasing numbers of properties viewed as uninsurable. On a brighter note the Environment Agency has given the rivers in mid-Devon (including the Creedy, Creedy Yeo, Little Dart, Lapford Yeo and their tributaries) the all clear, so we can rest easy for the time being.
