Commenting on Des Browne's statement to Parliament today on the detention of a Royal Navy boarding party by Iran, Liberal Democrat Shadow Defence Secretary, Nick Harvey MP said:
"We are lucky that this episode was merely a national embarrassment and not a national disaster.
"However, it is clear that there are still questions that need to be answered.
"If the operations, intelligence, equipment and resources are not to blame, and neither is the chain of command, it begs the question: what did go wrong?
"Who will ultimately stand up and take responsibility for this episode?
"If we are sending personnel to carry out boarding operations in such dangerous and politically sensitive waters without adequate training, then we must be told.
"Whilst it was clearly a shambles, to focus on the media issue above all else would be to ignore the crucial question of how prepared our personnel were for such an important task."
