Now that the proverbial dust has settled and all the media fuss has died down following the opening of the Taw Bridge and Bypass - I hope that this new bridge heralds a new Barnstaple.
So far all the feedback I have been getting has been very positive, looking around town the impact does seem to be dramatic. The new roundabouts, Sticklepath route, bypass and bridge all seem to be functioning smoothly. I can also testify that the view from the bridge looking out over Barnstaple and back up the Taw is very impressive.
Clearly July/August will be the acid test for the traffic when we are at the height of the tourist season. To date though everyone seems to be genuinely pleased and the general sentiment seems to be that it will not be long before we take the bypass and the bridge for granted - simply an unobtrusive part of our every day landscape.
The environmental impact also seems to be minimal, notably the geese are back on the Taw and seem perfectly happy. It is early days of course to predict the full economic impact, there has been talk of injecting up to £300 million into the local economy over the coming years with the town redevelopment - what is clear is that the easing of congestion will help businesses, commuters, shoppers and tourists alike. I can hear many of you saying 'and not before time…'
