Last week South West Liberal Democrat MP's met with South West Water's Chief Executive, Christopher Loughlin to discuss Government plans to transfer ownership of private sewers to the water companies
Commenting on the meeting, North Devon MP Nick Harvey says:
'In February Minister for Climate Change and Environment Ian Pearson announced the government is proposing transferring responsibility of private sewers over to the water companies in three years time.
'While on paper this seems like a good idea, private sewer liability is always a worry for home owners, the Government has made it clear that the cost of the transfer will be picked up by customers..
'For South West Water this will equate to £40m in absorption costs and an additional increase in operational costs. During the consultation period I will for one be calling on the Government to consider very carefully how the financial burden is handled - the net result is that we will need help.
'The South West continues to struggle with the recent rise in water prices and we had been reassured that these would level out over the next few years; if the transfer of private sewers goes ahead I cannot see how this will happen. All in all this is not good news.'
