Last month Exeter Airport celebrated its 70th Anniversary. The first aircraft landed on 10 May 1937, although the airport was not officially opened until the following year. I am conscious that Exeter which hosts the second largest airport in the South West after Bristol, is enjoying a landmark year. In January Devon County Council sold the airport to Regional & City Airports (Exeter) Ltd for the princely sum of £60m. Now a key holiday transport hub we will all watch its future development with great interest and anticipation. In particular a new departures lounge is planned for 2010. The presence of Flybe over the last three years has greatly boosted passenger services and its success is such that the company has withdrawn its surplus services from Bristol. The ongoing success of Exeter Airport must been seen as one of the great success stories of the South West and can only be a good thing for us here in North Devon.
