BAGHDAD WALL WILL BE DIVISIVE AND WORK AGAINST PEACE BUILDING EFFORTS - HARVEY

April 20, 2007 4:12 PM

Responding to recent reports that American troops are building a three-mile wall to separate Sunni and Shia communities in Baghdad, Liberal Democrat Defence Spokesperson Nick Harvey MP said:

"It seems that no-one learns from history. The wall in Berlin during the Cold War and the 'Security wall' in Israel and the Occupied Territories have already shown that such a measure is unwise and divisive.

Rather than trying to foster cooperation and improve relations in a tense and hostile environment, this wall will only serve to further heighten the current divide and drive a wedge between people.

Certainly the status quo is untenable but there must be more effective and enduring solutions which attempt to build peace and bring about a secure, stable and united Iraq."

If you are a resident of the North Devon constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
