WORRYING INCREASE IN CRIME ACROSS PARTS OF BARNSTAPLE

April 18, 2007 4:06 PM

'According to the latest figures as a whole across North Devon violent assault has risen by less than 5%, robbery is down by nearly 35%, while house burglary has fallen buy almost 13% and vehicle theft and drug offences have dropped by over 20%,' which is all very welcome news say Nick Harvey.

'Encouragingly some areas of Barnstaple have also seen a decline in crime rates, St Georges & Frankmarsh looks a particular success story with a 40% fall in assaults and burglary. Longbridge and Pilton have also seen reductions in these types of crime.'

'However,' adds Nick Harvey 'I am slightly worried by the dramatic rise in violence and burglary in other areas. There has been a massive jump of over 70% in violent assaults and 40% in burglary in Forches and Whidden Valley. Forches has also been blighted by car theft. Gorwell & Fort Hill has similarly seen a 23% rise in violent assaults and a 40% increase in burglary.'

'In terms of actual numbers Central Barnstaple and Newport remain the most violent areas with a total of 745 reported violent assaults over the past year, representing an increase of over 10%.'

'Ultimately I am encouraged that the positive trends achieved by the Police can be rolled out across Barnstaple as they have been across the region.'

If you are a resident of the North Devon constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
