Commenting on the resignation of Nigel Griffiths as Deputy Leader of the House of Commons, Liberal Democrat Shadow Defence Secretary, Nick Harvey MP said:
"This resignation highlights the unhappiness in the Labour Party over Tony Blair's attempts to force MPs into making a decision on Trident years before it is necessary.
"It is clear that the Prime Minister is going to have to rely on the Conservatives if this part of his increasingly tarnished legacy is to make it through the House.
"Making this decision now will prevent Britain from playing any constructive role in multilateral disarmament talks, particularly the 2010 review conference."
