Nick Harvey with North Devon College student association members and staff
Local MP Nick Harvey visited North Devon College last week to meet with representatives of the North Devon College student association and staff, and talk to students as part of the college's new "Ambition Initiative".
Nick praised the work being carried out to inspire students' ambitions for the future, and expressed his delight at the enthusiasm and involvement of the students and staff in the NUS association.
"As someone who started out my career in student politics, it is fantastic to see young people at North Devon College working so hard and with such enthusiasm for the benefit of their fellow students."
Following lunch with the student's association Nick spoke to college students about his life in politics and explained how they can get involved in the political system.
Asked how young people can become active, Nick Harvey said:
"There is no point waiting for "them" to change things in politics, "them" is all of us, we are society and we have the power to change things"
"It is vital that young people get involved in the political system. Even if you are not yet eligible to vote, you can campaign, protest and make your voice heard."
Ralph Hodgson, a politics lecturer at the college, welcomed Nick's visit saying:
"Nick's talk was a great insight into the workings of Westminster and life as a constituency MP,"
"He pulled no punches on the pros and cons of his chosen career and gave some terrific advice, including ideas on the types of jobs people can get into after working in politics."
"It was a lively event and a great start to the Ambition Initiative series of talks."
"The students kept Nick on his toes, asking a range of questions on topics covering everything from how to get into politics to lowering the voting age and the global economic crisis."
