LOCAL MP DRAWS ATTENTION TO THE INEQUALITIES OF THE DIGITAL DIVIDE

May 9, 2008 10:08 AM

For those in rural areas, there is a clear 'digital divide' that accompanies the digital switchover. The 'digital divide' creates a gap between those with access to digital communications technology and those without and results in an inequality of access based on where people live.

Addressing this problem local MP Nick Harvey has tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM) to raise awareness within Parliament.

Local MP Nick Harvey said:

"For many, the digital TV switchover process causes a whole number of problems. For those in the South West of England in particular, the digital TV switchover creates a 'divide' and a visible imbalance in access to communications, as those unable to access new digital technology are left with no alternative.

It is ludicrous that some people are at a disadvantage and are unable to enjoy the benefits of the 21st Century just because they live in rural areas. Appropriate structures need to be put into place that allow for everyone to have access to these services, regardless of where they live."

EDM 1526

DIGITAL DIVIDE IN RURAL AREAS08.05.2008

Harvey, Nick

That this House recognises the existence of a digital divide in rural areas of the UK; notes that residents in areas such as Devon are being further exposed to this problem through the digital television switchover; is concerned that residents in South West England are still falling prey to inadequate systems of implementation preventing them from enjoying access to internet, mobile and television services which denies them the benefits of 21st century communications available to others; and calls for the implementation of systems combining the use of satellites and appropriate ground-based communications technology that remove transmission blind spots so that these services are available to everyone irrespective of location.

If you are a resident of the North Devon constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
