At a protest outside Parliament last week, North Devon MP Nick Harvey pledged his support to hundreds of Gurkhas who are campaigning for the right to remain in the UK and for pension equality with British solders. Currently, Gurkhas who were discharged before 1997 have no right of leave to remain in the United Kingdom or to become naturalised British citizens.
Commenting, Nick Harvey said,
"Gurkhas who serve and have served in the British Army are a credit to the nation and deserve the highest recognition for their bravery and commitment. Yet, based on the Government's arbitrary timeline, they have been denied the right to remain in the UK, as well as the same basic remuneration we offer to British troops. This is a little short of an outrage."
Nick Harvey has tabled a Parliamentary Early Day Motion (EDM) on the issue. EDM 1194 calls on the Government to allow all Gurkhas who have served at least four years in the British Army to apply for indefinite leave to remain in the UK and naturalisation as British citizens, irrespective of their retirement date. The EDM has so far attracted the signatures of 55 MPs.
