Commenting on today's 2008 Budget Report to the House, local MP Nick Harvey said:
"Today's budget yielded few surprises. It was disappointing attempt at change and did little to distinguish red from blue.
The economic problems we are experiencing are of the Government's own making as it continues to borrow and gamble in the hope of a lucky break.
This budget further short-changes those who most need help and provides empty environmental efforts that will fail to address the challenges we face until 2009 at the earliest.
The Government has missed its chance of meeting its child poverty targets by 2010 with a commitment that falls £2.5 billion short of what is needed, and has attempted a headline grabbing con trick on Winter Fuel payments.
The Government will not change behaviour with its increases in alcohol, and continues to penalise drivers while failing to improve essential services.
We cannot continue to ignore the critical state of personal and private borrowing and its impact on the economy. Families, service personnel and the most vulnerable have been let down by a budget of lip-service and 'Green' gimmicks that will help the rich while continuing to squeeze normal tax-payers."
