I have long been a keen advocate of recognising veteran's achievements and a campaign medal is long over due for those who served in Bomber Command during 1940-45. This was clearly a political decision at the time that has rankled ever since.
I recently supported Early Day Motion 218 in the Commons, which called on the Government to issue such a medal recognising the enormous achievement of Bomber Command's volunteer pilots and air crew in crippling the Nazi war machine and paving the way for the 1944 invasion of Europe. In the course of which Bomber Command lost 1,500 heavy bombers and 56,000 lives all sacrificed for their country.
The failure of the Committee on the Grant of Honours, Decorations and Medals at the end of the war to recognise service in Bomber Command as an operational qualification for decorations was a mistake that should now be rectified for this unique service.
