The publication of the final recommendations of Invest in Fish South West, a pioneering initiative to achieve sustainable and profitable fisheries in our region, is I believe the first of its kind to bring together such a wide range of different stakeholders to build consensus on achieving sustainability in the industry.
The South West has a long and proud history of fishing and the fleet uses a diverse range of fishing gear. The region also has a large number of stakeholders in the fishing industry such as fishermen, statutory bodies, Non-Governmental Organisations, fish processors and retailers, restaurateurs and anglers. They are all increasingly concerned about declining fish stocks and seek to achieve more long-term fisheries management.
The overall aim of the project is to improve fish stocks in the long term while balancing the needs of the community, the regional economy and the wider marine environment. The project was built on a partnership between WWF-UK, Marks and Spencer and the National Federation of Fishermen's Organisations.
I am very encouraged by the project's success in engaging in dialogue with key players. This consensus was a remarkable achievement and culminated in a number of key recommendations. I firmly believe that these recommendations can play a vital role in the management of our fisheries across the UK as well as ensuring proper protection of our marine environment here in the South West.
