Commenting on John Hutton's attack on EU countries for failing to do enough to support the NATO mission in Afghanistan, Liberal Democrat Shadow Defence Secretary, Nick Harvey said:
Nick and Nick Clegg with British Troops in Afghanistan in 2008
"There is certainly a case for more 'heavy lifting' to be done by our European allies in Afghanistan.
"But John Hutton should remember that key European allies committed to Afghanistan while opposing the disastrous war in Iraq.
"Why should they have to endure this Government's lecturing when it was the Bush administration and Britain that diverted vital troops, equipment and diplomatic focus away from Afghanistan?
"President-elect Obama's long-standing opposition to the war in Iraq will provide a greater incentive to other European states to step up to the plate than lectures from John Hutton."
