LOCAL MP SUPPORTS CAMPAIGN TO END CHILD POVERTY

January 15, 2009 4:45 PM

Local North Devon MP Nick Harvey has shown his support for the Campaign to End Child Poverty.

Commenting in the same week as the Liberal Democrats released their own independent report into social mobility and the Government launched its White Paper on Social Mobility, Nick Harvey MP said:

"That your situation of birth and the income of your parents should still determine your life chances is a scandal."

"When they entered Government the Prime Minister pledged to reduce the numbers of children living in child poverty, yet ten years on and we are no nearer to achieving that goal."

"There should be fair and permanent tax cuts for family, more funding for schools - particularly for the most disadvantaged pupils - and a concerted and committed effort to help the 3.9million children living below the poverty realise their full potential."

Further Information

The Liberal Democrats commissioned an independent report into social mobility. The findings can be found here:

CAMPAIGN TO END CHILD POVERTY

15.12.2008

Davies, Dai

That this House is deeply concerned that there are 3.9 million children living below the poverty line in the United Kingdom, which is one of the worst records in the EU and amongst other wealthy countries; recognises the appalling damage poverty does to children's well being and life chances; further recognises the strength of public concern, as demonstrated by over 10,000 people at the largest ever event in support of an end to child poverty, the Campaign to End Child Poverty's recent rally in Trafalgar Square; believes that British children should not have to continue suffering worse levels of poverty than their counterparts in other wealthy countries; notes research by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation indicating that social and economic problems resulting from child poverty cost the United Kingdom at least £25 billion each year; believes that the Government should recognise, measure and act on relative poverty; and calls on the Government to eradicate United Kingdom child poverty by 2020.
