Local MP Nick Harvey has condemned the Government's narrow victory in the House of Commons vote on a third runway at Heathrow last night as "deeply troubling".
The vote in the House last night [Wednesday 28th January] saw the Government push through the decision for a third runway at Heathrow Airport. It was passed despite significant opposition from individuals, campaign groups and all three parties and will see a considerable expansion of aviation in the South East.
Commenting on the outcome today, Nick Harvey MP said:
"These developments are deeply troubling and undermine any green credentials the Government claimed to have. Ministers have shown scant regard for the very real and present threat of Climate Change and the justified concerns of many; choosing instead to succumb to the 'economic interests' of a few.
"The expansion of Heathrow will inflict even more noise pollution on the tens of thousands of people who live in the surrounding area, and Sipson, a village of 700 properties which stands on the site of the runway, would have to be demolished.
"I am supporting the Greenpeace Coalition's scheme to buy plots of land near Sipson, and I have already got my own part of the land. I will continue to support concerted efforts to prevent the Government from forcing this through.
The battle over the third runway is far from over yet"
Further Information
One gets an indication of just how controversial this is when one looks at the extent of the opposition - Liberal Democrats and Tories were joined by many Labour MPs in the Noe Lobby.
The Liberal Democrats were the first party to oppose the Governments plans and have long championed better public transport, especially high speed train links, which could be used to significantly decrease short hall flights.
Nick owns a part of the land which is due to become the Third Runway as part of the Greenpeace Coalition Scheme.
