Lib Dem shadow defence secretary NICK HARVEY has warned of the dangers of any military attack on Iran in an attempt to dissuade it from pursuing its nuclear ambitions.
Speaking at the Oxford Union and warning that any such attack, even if were to delay Iran's nuclear programme would only make it more inevitable in the long term, Nick Harvey said that it would also light a fuse in a volatile region and inflame Islamic opinion throughout the world.
He called instead for constructive engagement with Iran, with the west trying to help overcome Iran's sense of military insecurity which leads it to want the nuclear deterrent. He also called for a "long game" given the importance of Iran to Britain's long-term commitment in Afghanistan, and the rising influence of younger generations of more liberal Iranians.
