The scandal of gas prepayment meter customers paying a premium to heat their homes continues. Commenting on the issue Nick Harvey said:
'While some energy companies have finally equalised charges for prepayment meter customers and quarterly bill customers - others have not.
'It is particularly scandalous that South West energy supplier EDF continues overcharging its prepayment customers.
'Clearly Ofgem has once again proved itself toothless on this issue and I commend the National Housing Federation for taking up the cause of those on low incomes.
'A change in the law is now urgently needed and I and my colleagues have been pressuring the Government to take appropriate steps.'
FURTHER INFORMATION
While the energy market regulator, Ofgem, has said it will introduce 'cost reflective pricing' to prevent energy suppliers from charging certain customers more for their energy, the National Housing Federation believes this does not go far enough.
The National Housing Federation represents 1,200 not-for-profit housing associations in England providing 2 million homes to 5 million people.
