Nick Harvey's recent intervention with the Ministry of Defence has helped Chivenor based service wives to honour the home front.
While their husbands were in Afghanistan with Commando Logistics Regiment Royal Marines on Op Herrick 9 a group of wives joked that they should be awarded a medal at the same time as their other halves, for putting up with all the pre-deployment training and keeping the home fires burning while the boys were away.
Says organiser Jill McMillan:
'I posted an idea on the Royal Navy Community website asking if anyone would be interested in buying a homecoming pin badge to wear at the medals parades, with any profits going to service charities (Help for Heroes, SSAFA, Royal British Legion etc.); The response overwhelming.
'Having funded ourselves we had problems clearing the design with the MoD so approached Nick Harvey; I very am grateful for his immediate help in getting this off the ground and hopefully making a lot of money for good causes.'
Nick Harvey says,
'Whilst troops are on operational deployment it is always a stressful time for the families left behind and they get little recognition for keeping things together.
'This is an excellent idea and luckily once I was onboard Minister for Veterans, Kevan Jones, recognising its merits pulled out all the stops in helping with the design. I would dearly like to see this scheme go national.'
