TIME TO CHALLENGE SofS OVER COMPULSORY ELECTRONIC ID

April 9, 2009 11:46 AM

Local farmer'I fully understand,' says Nick Harvey, 'farmers concerns over the latest EU infection control measures for sheep.

'For those who took part in the voluntary scrapie flock scheme run by Defra, it involved a great deal of extra work and certainly in some cases the electronic databases contained significant errors.

'In addition local farmers do not believe there is strong evidence that the database for cows has made a significant impact in the fight against the spread of animal diseases.

'I remain to be convinced that this sheep scheme will be cost effective. The proposed system will use an electronic device incorporated in the sheep's ear tag, bearing in mind that sheep regularly lose these tags the database will hardly be foolproof.

'Hilary Benn, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, needs to fully address farmers concerns rather than just foisting this initiative on them and this is the line I will be taking.'

If you are a resident of the North Devon constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
