'The homecoming parade through Barnstaple on 23 April for the Commando Logistics Regiment, recently back from Afghanistan, could not have gone any better,' says Nick Harvey.
'In the brilliant sunshine the men and women marched through town and up the strand to the sound of the band, amidst swirling pink summer blossom and for a moment the scene was like something out of a Hollywood movie.
'The cheering school children simply added to the atmosphere and everyone present felt immensely proud. Talking to one woman afterwards she said the occasion brought a tear to her eye and this was the general consensus.
'It was pleasing that North Devonians were able to separate the policy issues from the achievement of the service personnel and that there was no repeat of some of the ugly demonstrations which have marred the parades elsewhere in the country.'
