Despite what turned out to be a fairly windswept day, a fantastic turnout of local community volunteers for the beach cleaning event largely funded by the Area of Natural Beauty's Sustainable Development Fund and Georgeham Parish Council on Saunton and Croyde beaches this weekend.
Nick Harvey and family also offered their support, with Nick commenting 'These sorts of public initiative which involve all the family are to be greatly praised. The biosphere is one of the very public faces of North Devon and it is good that the local community rallied together to help keep it clean. These type of community events also help remind us of the areas of outstanding natural beauty which we have here on our doorsteps.'
Volunteers from North Devon's Biosphere Reserve, Croyde Surf Life Saving Club, Croyde Youth Club and Croyde's Skateboard Club collected over 60 bags of general rubbish, a large pile of fishing nets, motorcycle helmet, and even a child's pedal car.
Matt Edworthy, North Devon's Biosphere Reserve Outreach Co-ordinator comments that, 'It was an amazing effort from all the volunteers, including a large number of children. It's been a significant help to keep the beach looking great for all its' visitors whilst also protecting wildlife from getting tangled up in it or ingesting it.' Matt adds that, 'The Biosphere is all about people feeling proud of their environment and doing what they can to protect and sustain it into the future.'
