Before the recent media exposure of the misuse of Parliamentary expenses, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner had already instigated meetings between the Metropolitan Police Service and the Crown Prosecution Service in relation to a number of allegations made to the police.
However, things have since moved on. Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, who is also chairman of the Metropolitan Police Authority, is supportive of the Police investigating MPs expenses where it appears fraud has been committed. Indeed Scotland Yard Commissioner, Sir Paul Stephenson and the Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir Starmer, have now established a panel to assess allegations of misuse of expenses and fraud.
Complaints are being passed to the Met's Specialist Crime Directorate, headed by Acting Assistant Commissioner Janet Williams. The cases are initially being assessed by Nigel Mawer, head of Specialist and Economic Crime. Clearly this now remains a matter for the CPS and Police to take forward.
