Residents in Ilfracombe are being encouraged to put their name to a new pledge which seeks to improve the lives of disabled people in their area. One North Devon resident keen to show his support is local MP Nick Harvey, who will be visiting the Scope shop located on Ilfracombe's High Street on the afternoon of 12 June to add his signature.
Lib Dem Shadow Defence Secretary's visit is timed to coincide with 'Time to Get Equal Week' (8-14 June) - Scope's annual awareness-raising week campaigning for disabled people's equality.
Staff at the shop run by the disability charity are asking customers and Scope supporters to pop in, have a tea or coffee, and sign the pledge.
The pledge enables people to take a small step to make a big difference to disabled people's lives by committing to do something or complain if they see a disabled person being treated unfairly. For example, speaking up if a restaurant is not accessible for wheelchair users.
Mr Harvey, a long time advocate for the rights of disabled people, said he hoped many of his constituents would follow in his footsteps:
"There has always been a great public spirit in Ilfracombe and by committing to fairness for local disabled people we are going to make it an even better place to live."
"This pledge is a great opportunity for people to put their support for disabled people's rights into action. I hope lots of people will encourage their family and friends to sign it too. "
Scope's 'Time to Get Equal Week 2009' brings together disabled and non-disabled people to celebrate disabled people's contribution to society and also to challenge the discrimination which many disabled people face on a daily basis
