While it has been confirmed that Fremington Training camp will be closed on 1 October 2009, I am at a loss to see how it is practical and cost effective to bring troops up from Okehampton to conduct driver training on Braunton Burrows.
Vital training has been taking place on the Burrows in preparation for overseas deployments; the loss of Fremington can only place increased pressure on the Royal Marines' base at Chivenor (already at full capacity) and local roads.
The MoD plans to sell off the 50 acre site with the loss of nine out of twelve employees who support activity at Fremington. The sale of the estate will cause environmental concerns for local residents who will not be keen to see it excessively redeveloped.
In light of the building programme at RMB Chivenor it is a shame that the MoD has chosen not to show the same level of commitment to Fremington.
As noted on 1 June I have raised this with the Secretary of Defence demanding to know how the decision can be viewed as cost effective in the long-term. I am also liaising with Lieutenant James Porter commander for Defence Training Estates South West.
Fremington Manor and the adjoining estates were used by the US military during WW2 and then by the School of Amphibious Warfare. The Manor later became a nursing home and the barracks Fremington Training Camp run by Defence Training Estates.
