Government funding cuts to the South West Regional Development Agency to the tune of £56 million have dealt the final body blow to the regeneration of North Devon College.
The RDA has announced that it will not be backing plans to build a new North Devon College (which had been bidding on £100 million from various government agencies including the Learning Skills Council).
Nick Harvey says 'The college has been badly let down by both the Learning Skills Council and the RDA - this is a crushing blow after all the hard work on the part of the college.'
North Devon College Principal David Dodd says 'I am gobsmacked by the RDA's decision.
'It appears that the agency has pulled funding on the basis of a mistake and the consequences for the area are potentially disastrous.'
Nick adds 'The RDA has pulled a £1 million grant on the basis that the LSC will not honour its previous commitments. The proposed new North Devon College at seven Brethren was central to the regeneration plans for Barnstaple.
'The Government's college capital funding programme has been shown to be a complete and utter shambles and is another example of a Government initiative that has not been thought out properly or followed through.'
