Veteran Liberal Democrat politician Lord Ashdown, or Paddy as he is known to most, regaled North Devon with tales of his adventurous life as part of his current book tour and North Devon Festival on the 24th. A natural raconteur he entertained and provided food for thought in equal measure.
Paddy has fond memories of North Devon from his days in the Royal Marines and the Special Boat Squadron and recalled with amusement his training at Instow and Chivenor. He said he could not think of anywhere more pleasurable to be on a warm summer's evening.
After his service in the Special Forces with a wry smile he confirmed he had worked for intelligence, but on advice was not at liberty to confirm which organisation … Soon after politics beckoned and a long and prestigious career.
While he amused and delighted with his stories - his presentation was tempered by sobering tales of genocide in the Balkans. He provided a salutary lesson to all that intolerance breeds intolerance.
Perhaps he struck the greatest cord when he supported devolving greater authority from central government to local communities- that was where true political representation should lay he said to warm applause.
