Nick Harvey, MP for North Devon, says: "I am very pleased to be able to report that the local authorities are prepared to consider the possibility of a taxi voucher scheme to run alongside concessionary bus travel in the next financial year."
In response to Nick's initiative Edward Chorlton, Deputy Chief Executive Devon County Council, responded:
"North Devon is one of seven Devon Districts which currently engage the County Council to run concessionary travel on their behalf - through the Devon Concessionary Bus Travel Partnership. Thus far, the Devon Partnership has opted to provide only the statutory minimum off-peak local bus travel and not to extend availability to other types of service. This remains their resolve for the 2009/2010 financial year.
"However, the scheme is kept under review and I shall suggest to the Partnership that this request be considered when the agenda next includes the discretionary scope of the scheme. This is likely to be in preparation for the 2010/2011 financial year."
Brian Holme, Head of Service Community & Leisure Services, North Devon Council, adds: "If over the coming months more disabled residents raise the same issue, I am more than happy to propose such a scheme for members to approve."
Nick says: "I am highly delighted with this positive response and I would urge anyone interested in a concessionary taxi voucher scheme instead of their concessionary bus travel to contact either Brian Holme or myself so that the authorities can gauge the level of demand."
