Commenting on General Sir Richard Dannatt's suggestion that major defence projects may have to be shelved to fund what the military needs in the short term, Liberal Democrat Shadow Defence Secretary, Nick Harvey said: "General Dannatt is absolutely right that Britain needs to take tough decisions on what our military priorities should be.
"Our Armed Forces are still skewed towards fighting the Cold War, rather than the counter-insurgency conflicts that we face today.
"It beggars belief that Gordon Brown is happy to spend billions on projects like Trident and Eurofighter, yet he is incapable of getting sufficient helicopters to our troops in Afghanistan.
"There is a growing acceptance among senior military figures that we neither need nor can we afford full-scale Trident replacement. Ministers should have the courage to reopen the debate.
"General Dannatt's comments further undermine the Government's absurd decision to exclude Trident from its defence review."
