PUBLIC DEBATE: COASTAL ACCESS AIDS SECURITY

August 5, 2009 12:09 PM

Coastal path walkers"Dear Nick, There should be a right to walk the coastal path. There are those land owners who are prepared to go to nearly any lengths to stop this. When I was chairman of the Devon County Council Public rights of way committee a lot of work was done to produce a path which enables the public to walk the coast path. This follows the line of the historic Coast Guard path. This is in my opinion the right of every Englishman to walk this route.

"Our forefathers gave their lives to defend this land of ours and its intrinsic freedoms to walk its rights of way. There were many instances where land owners bordering the coast tried to interfere with this right. The solution for the campsite owners is to fence off the path from their land.

"If the landowner is allowed to move these paths it raises some land values enormously at the cost of access to the public and our peoples.

"When people bought the land they knew that the paths were there or that they were proposed and where they have been created they have been compensated from the public purse.

"The South West Coast Path brings many millions of pounds into the economy of the South West. It is of value beyond price.

"The Coast Guard path follows around the coast between the land and the High Tide Line. It is also essential for national security as it gives people the right to walk the waters edge without let or hindrance. Many eyes lead to local security. What is this worth to drug smugglers, people traffickers etc."

If you are a resident of the North Devon constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
