Reverend Geoffrey Squire drawing on parishioners experiences says: 'its all very well the councils talking about bus passes, but what's the use of a bus pass when there are few buses or none at all?
Its all very well them talking about 'Ring & Ride' but there is confusion as to whom can use them (I am informed that a 55 year old lady who is prohibited from driving for medical reasons is not entitled to use them). Furthermore, they only operate during very restricted hours.
'For all those who do not have a car it's like having a curfew imposed. Even if people do have driver friends on who they can normally depend for lifts, many are frightened that they will be trapped some miles away if the voluntary arrangement goes wrong.
'A taxi voucher would, as you say, be a great improvement and help elderly and vulnerable people keep safe and give them real freedom and enable people to access the medical treatment they need. The authorities have to provide funding to pay for the use of bus passes by those who are able to use them. They provide very little and often nothing in relation to those who have or are entitled to have a buss pass but are unable to use them because there are few buses or none at all where they live.'
