DON'T PENALISE SMALL FARMERS WARNS MP

"They play a key role in the health of our rural communities and this could be damaged by Government recommendations."

"Reforms to the agricultural single payment scheme could force smallholders into poverty. Defra is proposing that farmers with less than 12 acres should lose their EU subsidies; currently the threshold is 2.5 acres. Nationally such a move could affect up to 17,000 farmers."

"Penalising small farmers to save administration costs it not the way ahead; efforts to support the local economy, cut carbon emissions and reduce food miles will not be helped by driving small farmers out of business."

"The Government must seriously consider the economic implications of such a move."
