Commenting on the death toll in Afghanistan rising above 200, and Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth's comments that British troops are expected to be off the front line within one year, Liberal Democrat Shadow Defence Secretary, Nick Harvey said: "Every loss of life in this conflict is a tragedy, and our thoughts and condolences are first and foremost with the families and friends of our fallen soldiers.
"Whilst of course highly desirable, nothing I have seen in this conflict leads me to believe it is even remotely possible that British troops will be off the front line within one year. What our troops and the public need is complete honesty about our mission in Afghanistan. Rather than trying to sway public opinion with false optimism, Bob Ainsworth must admit we need a fundamental change of gear, and a shift from a purely military campaign to one which focuses on achieving peace through meaningful political engagement, co-operation and progress.
"Only a sustainable political resolution will succeed in bringing lasting peace and stability to the region, and ensure that we can bring our troops home for good."
