Nick Harvey says, 'Defra's latest report Animal Health 2008 confirms that the Government's animal disease control regime is simply not working. There has been an almost 19 per cent increase in Bovine TB, with the vast majoring of the new outbreaks occurring in the South West and Wales.
'Combating this situation is costing the tax payer almost £100 million a year in testing and compensation for slaughtered livestock. Alarmingly the National Beef Association is estimating that based on the current infection rate the cost could spiral to £1 billion a year.
Here in Devon Bovine TB has increased in herds from 4 per cent to 25 per cent over the past decade. I and my colleagues have continued to lobby the Government for action as this policy of sticking their heads in the sand has got to stop.'
