North Devon MP, Nick Harvey has recently highlighted public concerns raised with him over the road surface on Barnstaple's Long Bridge, which could be a potential safety hazard for the forthcoming Tour of Britain Cycle race.
"This is a prestigious event for North Devon and it is vital that that the local authorities come up with adequate funding to ensure the safe passage of these world class cyclists,' says Nick.
In response to his concerns, Devon County Council's Deputy Chief Executive, Edward Chorlton claims there is not a problem stating:
"The integrity of the carriage surface on the Long Bridge, Barnstaple is considered to be sound and there are no proposals to carry out an extensive resurfacing scheme in advanced of the arrival of the Tour of Britain."
Nick argues:
"Despite these reassurances I would hope remedial work is carried out. Recent inspection of the Seven Brethren end showed a sizable part of the surface was non-existent, other areas had subsided and cracked, drain covers were exposed and road markings faded. The visual evidence speaks for itself."
However, Edward Chorlton insists:
"The bridge is inspected on a monthly basis and any safety defects are repaired accordingly. Additional inspections are carried out when defects are brought to our attention, and again repairs are required are carried out in line with our highway maintenance policies. We will be carrying out further inspections of the route in advance of the race taking place."
