Following photographic evidence provided by a member of the public this summer suggesting vehicle damage to Braunton Burrows Biosphere, Nick Harvey challenged the MoD to explain exactly what they up to on the training area.
Nick says, "I was alarmed by photos showing heavy track gouges down some of the dunes leading to large flood pools - clearly this had to be investigated as a matter of urgency, especially in light of the volume of training that goes on at the Braunton Burrows Training Area."
In response Bill Rammell, Minister for the Armed Forces was swift to clarify the MoD's actions:
"We take all such allegations seriously, therefore Natural England were asked to look at the tracks in the areas highlighted. They concluded that no damage had been done to the Site of Special Scientific Interest and that there is no increased risk of flooding.
"Although individual servicemen may have stated that they were unaware that the area is a SSSI, I can reassure you that the environmental sensitivity of the area is brought to their attention. Indeed, all personnel using the training area are given a briefing prior to entry.
The MoD takes protection of our natural heritage extremely seriously."
"I have no objection to the training that takes place on Braunton Burrows," concludes Nick, "in fact much of it is vital and unique. However, it is important that any complaints of damage are taken seriously and investigated immediately."
