"I fully endorse," says MP Nick Harvey "the Food Standard Agency's renewed campaign launched this month to reduce salt intact levels. Consuming too much salt is a proven and significant risk factor in developing high blood pressure and related illnesses.
"The Agency is seeking to cut the average salt intake to 6g and to lower levels for our children. The latter are particularly at risk from processed foods.
"It's an alarming fact that every year one in three deaths in the UK are attributable to cardiovascular disease. The FSA needs to continue to pressure the Food Industry to lead by example and to advise consumers on the right choices when it comes to their grocery basket."
According to the FSA currently the UK's population wide salt intake is 8.6g, a reduction of 0.9g since the start of the FSA's reduction initiative.
To maintain progress towards the 6g salt target the FSA has recently revised voluntary salt reduction targets for 80 categories of foods, including those that contribute most to the salt intake. These are: bread, meat products, breakfast cereals, cheese, butter and fat spreads, baked beans, ready meals, soups, pizzas, crisps and snacks.
