DRUG COUNSELLING SERVICES FACE CRIPPLING CUTS

October 23, 2009 2:35 PM

drug capsule"Devon Primary Care Trust cuts to the Drug Action Teams initiative will result in the loss of over 50 per cent of the drug counselling posts in Devon," says the MP for North Devon, Nick Harvey.

"The PCT's actions will have a devastating impact on the Quay Centre here in Barnstaple, which deals at specialist level helping drug addicts and alcoholics.

"In particular the axing of the specialist trained to work with expectant mothers on drugs will be a loss to the community.

"To further compound matters the Criminal Justice Team who monitor treatment orders by courts is also being cut back. The effect will be a disaster for those who desperately need help.

"Maintaining services across rural North Devon are very difficult at the best of times without the PCT cost cutting. Our community teams do a first class job on already very tight budget, and any reduction in these services will be a scandalous dereliction of duty.

"I would ask everyone involved in this process to seriously think again and am currently raising this issue as a matter of urgency with the Primary Care Trust."

If you are a resident of the North Devon constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
