According to the National Housing Federation's 'South West Home Truths' report after South Hams, housing in North Devon is the second most expensive in the county. Overall Devon is named the second least affordable county in the South West. This highlights the growing need for more affordable housing.
According to the Federation's data average house prices in North Devon are £227,844 which equates to 15.2 times the average income of £14,971.
Nick Harvey MP comments, "Whilst perhaps not surprising, North Devon's place in the Devon housing league table is nonetheless a cause for concern, as is the situation across the entire county. Our area remains a very popular one to live in and the prices partly reflect that supply continues to be outstripped by demand.
"Our low average income is a reflection of North Devon's population; we just don't have the density of many of the other areas in the county - this coupled with high house prices is a major problem for most people.
"Ultimately local authorities are going to have to start building more social housing to meet demand."
There are almost 22,000 households in Devon on waiting lists, an increase of nearly 47 per cent over the last five years. Second homes constitute 10 per cent of housing in South Hams and 4 per cent in North Devon.
The National Housing Federation is calling for greater public investment in social housing.
