NORTH DEVON PASSPORT OFFICE FACES CLOSURE

October 30, 2009 11:38 AM

IPS"News that North Devon's only passport office in South Molton is facing closure is unwelcome," say Nick Harvey MP. "This is a local service and forcing people to travel to Exeter or Plymouth will cause difficulties for some."

When Nick Harvey quizzed the Home Office on its intentions Meg Hillier, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State responded:

"The review showed clearly that the office in your constituency is not being well used - with only 18 per cent interview capacity being taken up.

"If, after consultation the decision to close the office goes ahead the closure would take place during 2010.

"In your local office there are 4 people employed. The Identity and Passport Service is hopeful that individuals will be able to be transferred to other jobs within the Home Office or other Government agencies locally."

"This is very disappointing, especially as the office has only been open for a few years and it does sound like a done deal," comments Nick Harvey. "IPS argues that there are other offices within easy reach, but for some this will clearly not be the case."

If you are a resident of the North Devon constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
