Commenting on reports that the head of Qinetiq has resigned following criticism of his firm (along with BAE) in the Nimrod report, Liberal Democrat Shadow Defence Secretary, Nick Harvey said:
"It is good to see evidence that some of those involved in this tragedy are apparently starting to take responsibility.
"There must now be questions asked about whether BAE needs to consider its responsibilities - especially as the company has so far refused to publicly accept the review's conclusion that they performed a 'lamentable job' which contributed to this disaster.
"BAE's effective monopoly on so much of Britain's defence equipment and maintenance work raises serious concerns, not just over value for money, but also whether such a lack of competition has consequences for the safety of our personnel.
"There will now be further pressure on the Strategic Defence Review to propose radical solutions and fully consider such issues. It cannot merely be another exercise in salami slicing budgets which takes no notice of wider concerns."
