In a dramatic about face the Prime Minister has rescinded the Government's decision to cut £20 million from the Territorial Army's budget, saying it was "the right thing to do."
His decision followed a furious backlash, which was not placated by a partial climb down in which the Government promised to find £2.5 million (this would have provided payment for just once a month rather than once a week).
Nick Harvey, the Liberal Democrat defence spokesman, said: "The state of the TA is much too important to be used as a political football in this way.
"It was a shocking error of judgment for the government to have contemplated this cut in the first place."
